Occupational Health: A important aspect of the control of occupational disease is early detection, so that treatment can be given while the disease is still reversible. The diseases included here are classified according to the hazardous substances that cause them and correspond with the list of occupational diseases adopted by the International Labour Conference, on the physiology of the main organ systems affected by the various chemical, physical and biological substances encountered in occupational settings and the tests that may be used for the early detection of disease.

(a) Biochemical and morphological changes that can be measured by laboratory analysis-for example: disturbed porphyrin metabolism in exposure to lead; inhibited cholinesterase activity in exposure to organophosphorus pesticides; changes in the activities of various serum enzymes; changes in the concentrations of the components of body fluids; chromosomal aberrations; and abnormal sputum cytology. Some changes may be detectable only after loading tests, e.g., on excretory hepatic functions, or by other special tests.

(b) Changes in the physical state and the function of body systems that can be evaluated by physical examination and by means of laboratory examination-for example, electrocardiograms, and tests of physical working. capacity and, tests of higher nervous functions.

(c) Changes in general well-being that can be evaluated by medical history and by the use of questionnaires.
